Inside Outside

SOMETIMES MY BLOG POSTS ARE ABOUT CONNECTING DOTS. My life is about connecting the dots, but only my friend Paul would say he understands that statement. Anywho, here are two dots “connected”— a totally odd and bizarre terra-cotta “cutaway” sculpture of a primitive human-like sitting man, and a more contemporary scientific illustration of a male human body who looks a bit like television’s Don Draper of Mad Men. The primitive one has a penis, the more modern representation of a man does not. I don’t know, I’m just making an observation here.

Fishing Trip Fail

Please click on image for a larger, more nightmarish view.

IF YOU ARE PRONE TO NIGHTMARES, here’s a good example of one—the fishing trip from hell. I love vintage illustration, and the Lewis Wayne Gallery in Dallas has some great stuff.

This is a vintage illustration by a person named Jay Weaver, an illustrator about whom the gallery has little information.

This is the original painted art entitled I Was Snake Bait that was used in an issue of Real Magazine, exact date and usage unknown. The image area measures 32” x 18.5,” and the medium is probably opaque watercolor (gouache).

Daddy? Why do you vote Republican?

(Above) The original editorial illustration, c. 1950, awaiting your answers! (Click image for larger view.)

I SPOTTED THIS ILLUSTRATION ON EBAY TODAY. CHECK IT OUT. It was done c. 1950. It’s screaming for an answer from “dad,” who happens to look a bit like Bill O’Reilly of FOX News. I have a few answers of my own, but I thought I’d let my readers reply.

What I am getting ready to ask of you, dear readers, is based on something I did as a kid. Even as small as 10 years of age, I used to cut photographs from the local newspaper and write my own “funny captions” for the pictures. Here’s what I want you to do. Go to “COMMENTS” and leave “daddy’s reply” to his son as to why he votes Republican. The top 5 comments I will add to the original art (digitally) and publish the comments next day. Have fun!
