IN THIS SERIES OF ARTWORKS, JENNIFER MAESTRE SAYS SHE WAS ORIGINALLY INSPIRED BY THE FORM AND FUNCTION OF THE SEA URCHIN. Using found objects—the ordinary pencil, she creates cactus like objects and prickly-spine animal-like forms. Organic and sensual, these objects beg to be touched but repel the viewer from doing so.

Maestre uses hundreds of pencils, and cuts them into 1-inch sections. Then, she drills a hole in each section (to turn them into beads), sharpens them all and sews them together. She uses a peyote stitch to hold it all together.

Spectacular! Again, my original thought about art and obsession holds true.

really creative, and I think I can never imagine the hard work it takes to make such spectacular art pieces.

She is one of my favourite artists on the whole planet. I love what she does and I even own one of her urchins.
