HERE IS A REALLY ODD, COPPER ENCASED SILHOUETTE, CIRCA 1820, of a woman with a huge head and tiny little flipper-like hands. Turn the small oval frame over and you will find a finely interwoven, heart-shaped design in braided hair with the initial “M” in the middle of the hearts. Probably a love token, this object was spotted on eBay.
Very nice. I used to find hair objects creepy, but with DNA and genetic coding, the day will come when these objects will provide more than a little awe, I think.
ReplyDeleteDo you think perhaps the 'flippers' could be a collar/bow/ruffle/etc?
ReplyDeleteSeems somehow more likely?
I would actually say that the "hands" might be Oak Leaves...I've seen them listed as pretty important symbols of old, especially in Dutch Hex Signs, standing for strength among other things.
ReplyDeleteEspecially given the sort of fern-like branches off of the back of the profile...
I think you are right Benjamin, about the hands. I see things so oddly— I like to think of them as an interpretation of hands.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for showing me and all the other folk these things of wonder. Mysteries are what I live for.
ReplyDeleteThere's an off chance this could relate to Martha Ann Honeywell, a woman with stumps for arms and only 3 toes who cut silhouettes amongst other things.
