WHAT CAN AN ARTIST’S PALETTE tell you about that artist? Possibly a lot. Interesting how Georges Seurat’s palette, so organized with massive amounts of white, makes you feel like you can match the palette to his style. Van Gogh’s palette, thick with paint—showing the struggle and fight of creating his many masterpieces. Delacroix’s palette may be my favorite. The color is so beautifully controlled, and he has dozens of “dark” and restrained colors. And with Gauguin, I wonder, can we see the color of the Tahitian landscape there?
I remember once getting the opportunity to hold in my bare hands one of Babe Ruth’s baseball bats, and one of his gloves. It was a rare and extraordinary experience few can say they have done. How would I feel to hold a palette that was once held by van Gogh or Gauguin? Incredible.

That would indeed be amazing. I would have loved to have seen Monet's palette too. Just yesterday, I recalled to a friend the time that I was in a small art museum in Hamilton, Ontario where they have one Monet (a real beauty) and one van Gogh. The latter painting was not even close to being a favourite of mine but I was suddenly struck by the fact that such a master's artwork was just a few inches from my nose. Before I really thought about what I was doing I found my finger touching the canvas.. just for a second. And I felt connected .. just for a second. Luckily, security was minimal being a small setting and no person or camera took note. I knew it was something I shouldn't have done, and it really was more reflex than thought.. but I'm still glad I did. Thanks for sharing these.
ReplyDeleteDelacroix, as an object is fabulous. And Hilary, I once saw a Van Gogh painting of an artichoke that I had to walk away from when I realized it was small enough to fit in my purse.
ReplyDeletethe palettes with the paints, look very much like the style of the painters.
