SUSAN MOORE IS A PHILADELPHIA ARTIST who once spent some time in St. Louis. Her husband is the comic graphic artist Charles Burns, whom I reported on in January. These portraits are quite large in scale, and though she uses real models, the portraits are intentionally devoid in personality, allowing the viewer to fill in the blanks. Her recent work, shown at the top, uses oil paint sticks, and is psychologically darker than her earlier work. Moore’s work is in many public and private collections, and even graced the cover of TIME magazine some years ago.

ReplyDeleteI love them all, but especially the older stuff. I think her treatment of the eyes epitomizes the adage that "the eyes are the windows to the soul." These soulless faces are a really strong statement to me, more than the newer, intentionally darker pieces. Yum, good stuff.
