ERNST HAECKEL (1834 – 1919) WAS A GERMAN BIOLOGIST, NATURALIST, philosopher, physician, professor and artist. With all of these professions, he left something for for all of us. His famous book, “Kunstformer der Natur” is the source for these incredible engravings. Enjoy.

  2. These fantastic images sent me in search of more information. As a long-time admirer of Karl Blossfeldt's photographs of plants, I should have known of Haeckel's influence on him. It's also interesting that a Haeckel scholar describes this work as "not just a book of illustrations but also the summation of his view of the world." Wow.

  6. I know, the first piece is absolutely psychedelic... almost like one of Gary's (Red-SSR's) incredible art.

Glad you all like this post!

  7. Patricia, do you have any information on where I might find such a movie about him?

  8. The film about Haeckle is "Proteus: A 19th Century Vision". It was made by David Lebrun in 2004, is 60 min. long and a tad bit dull. However, if you are interested in E.H.'s history, it is of interest!

  9. I love Haeckel's work. I have used his images in some of my own pieces. I see from Patricia that he designed holiday cards--how perfect!
