A Bad Victorian
ALL I CAN SAY, I wish I knew her. An independent, strong woman in a time when women were anything but. Susan B. Anthony—move the hell over.
I found this image somewhere, and can't remember where. Owner, my apologies.
This is a wonderful photo. A very independent woman.
I do feel the need to disagree with your second sentence. I think women had to be terribly strong to live the sort of lives most women would have had. I shudder to think of multiple children, factory conditions, illness, corsets, long skirts, coal heat, no air-conditioning, no electricity, laundry, repression, etc.... Lack of independence, you could argue, which makes Susan's (and the other suffragette's) accomplishments all the more impressive. :^)

Love your blog.
Wow, she looks like trouble. In the best possible way.
It's the subject matter of the tats I especially like. Woman taming lions, serpents wrapped around trees. Nice.
it's Maud Stevens Wagner (Feb, 1877 - Jan, 1961),wife of famous tattoo artist charles wagner and first american woman tattoo artist herself.
UnaOdd Lynn-you are absolutely correct, I was making a metaphorical point, saying the Susan B. was not the only one.
And billyjane— thanks for the I.D.!
so we think those are real Japanese full body style tattoos?? Definitely would have loved to meet such a woman in her time!!!
This is Maud Stevens Wagner, but actually she was the wife of tattooist Gus Wagner. She also happens to be my great aunt!
ckw
she looks like Helen Bohnam Carter's ant!
